The 2ndJoint Project Meeting of WWRP Projects- EXOTICCA/TLFDP/UPDRAFT, sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization, and hosted by Nanjing University, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences and China Meteorological Administration Shanghai Typhoon Institute, was held in Nanjing University from September 3 to 5, 2019. More than 60 scholars from home and abroad attended the meeting. They were from the World Meteorological Organization, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (US), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (US), Colorado State University (US), Massey University (New Zealand), Macquarie University (Australia), City University of Hong Kong, Pukyong National University (Korea), India Meteorological Department, Hong Kong Observatory, Japan Meteorological Agency, and more than 20 Chinese units such as the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Meteorological Administration, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Sun Yat-sen University, Beihang University, National University of Defense Technology, and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology.Tan Zhemin, vice president of Nanjing University, and Nanette Lomarda, senior scientific official of the World Meteorological Organization, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Chen Lianshou, academician of the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences presided over the meeting.
The tropical cyclone project set up by WWRP is dedicated to promoting research on tropical cyclone forecast, strengthening international cooperation, achievement transformation and capacity building in this field. The project is also oriented to prop up the forecasting capability of tropical cyclones and monsoon weather. This meeting mainly included 3 topics:
1. The progress of three tropical cyclone projects under WMO/WWRP was summarized and reviewed. They are Experiment on Typhoon Intensity Change in Coastal Area (EXOTICCA), Typhoon Landfall Forecast Demonstration Project (TLFDP) and Understanding and Prediction of Rainfall Associated with Tropical Cyclones (UPDRAFT).
2. A number of research institutions, universities and companies participating in the joint meeting put forward suggestions and plans for the research direction and cooperation of future projects based on the WWRP framework.
3. More than 20 well-known experts from home and abroad were invited to deliver academic reports on tropical cyclone observation, intensity and structure, precipitation mechanism, forecast and others. It demonstrated the latest research outcomes, business transformations and fueled technological exchanges.
Understanding and Prediction of Rainfall Associated with Tropical Cyclones (UPDRAFT) was proposed by the Key Laboratory of Mesoscale Severe Weather (Nanjing University) and officially approved as the World Weather Research Program (WWRP) Research and Development Project (RDP) by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Committee in November 2014. This projectis committed to observation test, mechanism and numerical simulation and others of tropical cyclone rainfall. With a duration term from 2014 to 2021, the program has Professor Zhao Kun and Professor Wang Yuan of our school as co-chief scientists. The heavy rainfall brought by the tropical cyclone seriously affects the economic and social development and the safety of people’s lives and property in China. In order to enhance the prediction of the typhoon heavy rainfall, UPDRAFT will delve into the key physical processes influencing the cyclone to shed a light to the main precipitation formation factors. In this way, the quantitative rainfall prediction of the numerical model is systematically evaluated, which can intensify model physics scheme and data assimilation technology. At the same time, a high-resolution observation-based database for scientific research can also be generated.
